Be Skin Savvy #24 ” Be Brown and Beautiful” That was the the name of the beauty Salon I worked at after graduating from The London Institute of Beauty Culture in 1986. It was owned by John Sarsfield (whose real job was something to do with British Wool Co.) and managed by his sister Gloria Bath. There were 5 estheticians (and we did everything, mani-pedis, body treatments, massage, electrolysis and of course facials), 5 tanning beds and a very lovely keep fit instuctor Iris Caldwell who hailed from Liverpool (Google her, her first boyfriend was George Harrison). Anyway, I would get to work early to lie under a tanning bed and bronze my body Oh and how lovely and evil it was too! But somewhere and somehow I wised up, and, embracing my pale skin became the norm. However, recently, prior to a family vacation it was time to try to bronze again. Safely….and so off I trotted to Janet Thompson at Spa la Vie to purchase a golden glow. Janet was extremely professional and gave me clear directions on prepping and after-care for my spray tan experince. I did as I was told and moved and bent and closed my eyes as needed. I allowed the tan to cook overnight before I showered and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. It hid imperfections and made me feel oddly glamourous. But I must say it was a little more work than I anticipated…..but so much safer than my 1980’s choice. I am pleased the young people today have this alternative because since Cocoa Channel made tanning fashionable I dont ever see it going out of style. However for those of us who are now suffering the consequences of past sun damage, check out my Luminous C facial! It works wonders on uneven sun-damaged skin.
